Electronic Cigarettes now have STYLE

AH style! Pretty much with the analog or "traditional" nicotine/tobacco cigarette the only style to be had was from the users themselves or of course accessories. Fancy lighters, ashtrays, cigarette holders were how the old smoking generation tried to be unique. Then it was how you held the cig, and how you flicked it away afterwards. So many different ways but it was still the same boring cigarette and much more unhealthy and messy of course.

Now I"ve been using my ecig for over a year now and yes it also became boring to the point that I was seeking out different colors like and styles since like I said no more fancy ashtrays are needed anymore.

Well it was fun while it lasted but if its gonna be electronic lets not go with the look of a hundred years ago.
So I shopped around a bit and found something more up to date in the new safer cig 2.0 era.

Well thats a little better. Of course there are now many many custom variations today. I just chose the simple red but its like techno looking ones also. For me since I'm still from the older age of smoking I took it light but for those more adventurous in their taste premiumecigarettes would be a nice start.

Rocker Tom Petty uses the electronic cigarette to help his tobacco cravings

In last months issue of the Parade magazine, 59 nine year old rocker Tom Petty still finds happiness making music. As with most rockers he has live the cool and yet dangerous fast life at times. "Got my electric cigarette here," he says. "It give you a shot of nicotine and steam." The vaors substitute for smoke. "I'm using these to edge off the smoking," he says. "Its just part of getting older and realizing you have to straighten up".

So how did you become introduced to electronic cigarettes?

For me it was Christmas of last year. So I"m at my parents house and we are all opening gifts but first a little background story if I may.

As a kid growing up with a house full of smokers for some reason it felt the smoke always drifted in my direction. We would be all be sitting in the living room and that cloud just hunted me down like a ghost or something. When I complained it was "ok lets open up a window or turn on a fan" but still I was the smoke magnet. Years later down the line in high school a friend passed me a "square" and I had a buzz for like two blocks. So me and my circle all smoked and drank and just did was some teens do at that age. So anyway those of us that did smoke during the 90's new it was bad for us but also knew that if you stopped before you got older the harm would be lessened. So most of us just said that it would be a high school thing and around age 20 would be the cut off limit at most.

There was a few of us that stopped and others like me that did not. Its also funny that those that stopped cigarettes continued with weed and alcohol but I stopped weed.

Ok fast forward and at 30 and still smoking cigarettes one day I go to my parents house for Christmas. My mother a 25+ year smoker had been telling me she was going to quit. I found it hard to believe because after my non-smoking Grandfather died of bone cancer she would say that cancer could get you cigs or not.

Well things began to get serious when she said no more smoking over her house and I balked saying yeah right with a laugh. When she told me she had not smoked a cigarette in a month that was my wake up call. So I open up my gift and its this little metal cylinder thing with another box of plastic objects. She tells me this is an electronic cigarette and she found them off the net. The term "found off the net" is never a good persuasive buying point for me since I've been
using the net over 10 years. Anyway shes my mom so that's good enough. Shes like "read the instructions, only put two drop in". "Its poison if you get it on your hands and mouth". I'm sitting there like what the heck are you giving me?

Well I try it out and just like the first time I tried to smoke a tobacco cigarette in front of this girl to impress her, I fail. Nothing comes out. Ok so its a learning curve, you have to pull it hard or something. So eventually I get the hang and go home. Later on that night I try to smoke a regular cigarette and what the heck it does not even feel the same. In fact it feel useless. So in the end guess a 25+ year smoker knows better than me. so now I am an e cig advocate and hope smokers that are trying to slow down can start with these. New smokers of course this is not for you.

Beware of Misleading Electronic Cigarette Advertising

With the increasing popularity of electronic cigarettes among smokers, the market is being flooded with fly-by-night companies, looking to take advantage of those unknowledgeable about the devices.

Electronic cigarettes burst onto the scene in 2005 and have been taking the smoking world by storm. Composed of a battery, heating element and a nicotine solution, they promise smokers the ability to "smoke" without most of the hazards associated with tobacco smoking.

The liquid contains propylene or vegetable glycol (a liquid base recognized as safe by the FDA), a low dose of nicotine and food flavoring, so it does not expose the user to the 4,000 toxins and 56 carcinogens found in tobacco smoke. It's generally accepted that the greatest danger with tobacco cigarettes is in the burning of the materials - or the smoke. Electronic cigarettes do not burn any material, therefore, are "smokeless." Based on this, retailers logically assert that electronic cigarettes must be much safer and less harmful than tobacco cigarettes.

However, there are some advertising claims of which smokers should be wary.

Avoid subscription scams

Some retailers offer a "free electronic cigarette" deal. What they don't tell you is that you will be signed up for an automatic, monthly delivery of overpriced refill cartridges, priced up to $70. Refunds are often very difficult to obtain.

Consumers may actually purchase refillable cartridges and higher quality nicotine solutions for much less online. Those "free" offers are not a "deal" in any way!

Be suspicious of high-priced starter kits

Many of the electronic cigarettes you hear about on the radio or see in the mall are all the same base model, rebranded for the retailer. Models sold in stores are priced higher to cover the overhead of retail spaces and store clerks. While many of these models work just fine for some consumers, many are low quality and perform poorly. Hundreds of dollars are spent on a device that quickly gets stuck away in a drawer.

Successful electronic cigarette owners, who researched the many product choices available, often find better quality devices online and for a fraction of the cost. For example, the extremely popular Joye510 model is available for just $55-$65through reputable online vendors. Compare that to inferior models being sold for up to $200 elsewhere.

Don't fall for overblown cartridge claims

Very often retailers claim that one electronic cigarette cartridge equals 20 or more tobacco cigarettes. This is simply not true. Because every smoker is different, how long a cartridge lasts varies, as well. Additionally, electronic cigarette owners find that, unlike stopping to smoke a full cigarette 20-30 times a day, electronic cigarette usage tends to be more even and continual throughout the day. This makes it nearly impossible to compare the number of cigarettes smoked to an electronic cigarette cartridge.

However, based on anecdotal reports, one cartridge is more akin to 3-8 cigarettes, not a full pack. Some higher quality, "cartomizer" style cartridges may last a whole day for the average user. Most experienced owners upgrade to the cartomizer styles or the refillable cartridges that are used with more affordable, higher-quality refill liquids.

You can't always use them "everywhere"

While electronic cigarettes are "smokeless," contrary to some advertising claims, they may not be allowed in some places.

For example, New Jersey recently passed a law to include electronic cigarettes in the indoor smoking ban, forcing electronic cigarette owners back outside with the smokers. And privately-owned businesses have every right to ban them from their establishments - which may occur in municipalities where indoor smoking is banned and they fear smokers may mistake the electronic cigarette for a real one.

So, it is advisable to research your municipality's statutes and also speak with the manager before using your device in a private establishment.

Be skeptical of unfounded health, safety and smoking cessation claims
Although thousands of electronic cigarette users have reported that they have "quit smoking" by switching to electronic cigarettes or have "stepped down" to non-nicotine cartridges, electronic cigarettes are notspecifically designed to treat nicotine addiction. They are designed to be a less toxic alternative, when a smoker cannot or will not quit using nicotine. So be wary of companies claiming their electronic cigarettes will help you "quit smoking."

Additionally, some ads claim electronic cigarettes are "harmless" or "100% safe."

Nicotine, though addictive, is a mild stimulant, similar to caffeine and is relatively harmless without the tobacco smoke. And while electronic cigarettes are undeniably less toxic and carcinogenic than actual tobacco smoking, they cannot yet be claimed to be "completely healthy" or "100% safe." Further testing needs to be done on the long-term effects of using them. The safest and healthiest thing smokers can do is to quit inhaling anything but air into their lungs.

However, for current smokers, who cannot or will not quit smoking, the electronic cigarette is a smart alternative. Just be a smart consumer and do your research first. It will save you a lot of money and frustration; increasing your chances of successfully switching to electronic cigarettes and getting away from deadly tobacco.

Illinois House of Representatives Needs More Info on E-Cigarettes

As noted in an earlier post, the Illinois Legislature is attempting to ban the electronic cigarette from being sold in Illinois. But at a hearing this week in front of the Human Services Committee, it was decided that Committee members needed more time to become familiar with the topic before making any decisions. This was due to the many e-smokers who showed up in the Illinois Legislature to make their opinions about the electronic cigarette known. This included State Rep. Constance Howard, D-Chicago, who stated, “I just wish there was something like these around before my mother died”.

The Human Services Committee will once again take up the issue on April 21st, 2010 at 9:00AM in the Stratton Building Room D-1 in Springfield, IL. More information on the status of the Bill can be found here.

We encourage all Illinois residents to contact the members of the Human Services Committee and let them know about their experience with the technology and/or their feelings about their government banning one product while leaving it’s deadly alternative, tobacco cigarettes, freely on the market.

American Lung Association Vs. Electronic Cigarettes

Organization's Efforts to Ban Devices Will Do More Harm Than Good

The American Lung Association has come out in full force by sending lobbyists to various state legislators to argue against the electronic cigarette.¹ While on the surface this seems like a reasonable effort, a lack of ;understanding the motivations of the electronic cigarette user has placed the ALA squarely on the wrong side of the fight for public health.A source at the ALA, an organization which claims to be dedicated to "save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease," acknowledged in response to a recent email inquiry that "yes there are fewer chemicals but your body is still being exposed to chemicals that should not be in your system. Nicotine can also cause the body harm, so yes many of the products do contain nicotine, but used correctly a person uses the products to wean down their nicotine level so they can completely get rid of it. Many people are using the e-cigs as an alternative to smoking the regular cigs thinking that it will not harm them and have no intention of quitting, just switching."

So, while the ALA admitted that electronic cigarettes contain fewer chemicals than tobacco cigarettes, they refuse to acknowledge the obvious health benefit that lack of the most toxic chemicals provides to the smokers who switch. Are lives and lung health the real issue here or is nicotine addiction? The ALA must know that numerous studies show that, absent the tobacco smoke, nicotine is relatively harmless and comparable to caffeine. The American Heart Association acknowledges that nicotine is "safe" in other smoke-free forms such as patches or gum.²

Research has also shown that many of the of smokers who successfully quit using nicotine gum never actually "wean down their nicotine level so they can completely get rid of it." The success rate of NRTs (nicotine replacement therapy) has dropped to 7.2%, resulting in chronic use of the products.³ Furthermore, according to a 2004 report, over 36% of gum users continue to use the products as a smoking replacement indefinitely.⁴ So nicotine itself is not what is killing people. The ALA's insistence on complete nicotine abstinence is admirable yet unrealistic and their claims about the dangers of nicotine, as compared to smoking, are clearly misleading.

The ALA email also acknowledged a fact already known to many e-cigarette insiders - that the majority of smokers who switched to electronic cigarettes had no intention of quitting smoking. So, why remove the only safer option available to those who would otherwise smoke the obviously deadlier tobacco cigarettes?

The only explanation is that the American Lung Association assumes that every smoker and electronic cigarette user wants to quit smoking and uses the devices as an NRT. That is an erroneous and very dangerous assumption.

In surveys of electronic cigarette owners conducted by CASAA (Consumer Advocates for Smoke-free Alternatives Association), respondents overwhelmingly stated that they did not use electronic cigarettes to quit smoking and would go back to smoking if denied access to electronic cigarettes.

An internet questionnaire of a self-selected sample of 783 daily users of electronic cigarettes asked, "Why did you start vaping?" ("Vaping" is a term for the vapor inhaled vs. smoke.) A staggering 92% chose to switch for reasons other than quitting smoking i.e. saving money or reducing the risks associated with smoking. Less than 8% stated they were using e-cigarettes to quit smoking.⁵

So, the ALA wishes to remove the safer alternative used by several hundred thousand electronic cigarettes users and force them back to smoking tobacco cigarettes, in order to "protect" the less than 8% who would otherwise be using an NRT?

Additionally, the ALA's belief that e-cigarette users will switch to traditional NRTs or quit altogether is disproved in yet another e-cigarette user questionnaire conducted by CASAA. This survey explored the habits and motivations of almost 1,000 electronic cigarette users. The poll indicates that, not only is the typical e-cigarette user a former smoker over the age of 26, but that they have overwhelmingly cut back or quit the use of tobacco cigarettes and have noticed improved health effects - indicating they provide the "improved lung health" the ALA is seeking to promote. Most importantly, the results indisputably contradict the assertion that electronic cigarette users will quit using tobacco should the devices be removed from the market. Over 80% of the respondents indicated they would most likely return to smoking tobacco cigarettes or use another smokeless tobacco alternative, such as snus. Less than 20% stated they would attempt to quit nicotine use altogether. ⁶While the nicotine abstinence approach may be the ideal, it simply does not reflect the reality that 80% of smokers do not even wish to quit in the immediate future. Wouldn't it make sense to encourage those smokers to switch to a less harmful alternative in the meantime?

In their single-minded drive to ban e-cigarettes, focusing solely on the small minority of electronic cigarette users who use the devices to quit nicotine, the ALA will do more harm than good to the majority of e-cigarette users who will inevitably return to smoking the more toxic tobacco cigarettes.

The American Lung Association needs to re-read their own mission statement and determine if their opposition to electronic cigarettes would be saving lives - their stated goal - or putting those lives right back into harm's way.

Refilling Your Empty E-Cigarette Cartridges

The cartridge is actually made up of the mouthpiece (the part you see on the end of the electronic cigarette...much like the "filter" of a tobacco cigarette) and the cartridge. The cartridge is a small plastic cup inside of the mouthpiece. Inside the cartridge is polyester batting that acts like a wick to hold the e-liquid. You can fill the cartridge while it is still in the mouthpiece or if you prefer you can take a needle or toothpick and stick it through the small hole in the mouthpiece. This will push the cartridge out of the mouthpiece, which can then be refilled with the eliquid. Please do not take the wick out of the cartridge as this will break the seal and then the wick can fall onto the atomizer when using, destroying your atomizer. Refilling is as simple as dripping a couple drops of ELiquid using the dropper onto the polyester wick. Then just slide the mouthpiece back onto the electronic cigarette and you are ready to e-smoke!

Several States Attempt to Ban Electronic Cigarettes

Several States are attempting to ban the sales of electronic cigarettes, and one product review specialist and e-cig advocate is concerned they do not understand the devices entirely.

Online PR News – 14-April-2010 – News reports state that several States are attempting to ban the sales of electronic smoking devices, or “electronic cigarettes,” as most people call them, and it has one e-cigarette review specialist outraged. Andy Gray, a long-time smoker who made the switch to electronic cigarettes, has been blogging about the topic of smokeless cigarettes for over six months, and in the process has become a major voice in the e-cigarette movement. His blog and product reviews are read by thousands of people each day, and Gray has become a respected soundboard for people looking to make the switch to a greener alternative to traditional cigarettes.

“I’m absolutely outraged that most people don’t seem to understand what this movement is all about. I have read many publications and quotes from people attempting to ban sales of electronic cigarette devices and one is just more uneducated than the other,” stated Gray. Gray points out the following associated press release:

“ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) – Anti-smoking advocates are going after tobacco strips that dissolve in the mouth and battery-operated e-cigarettes that deliver puffs of nicotine vapor.

They rally Wednesday at the Capitol for a ban on the sale of the products to youth.

“Whatever the FDA approves, we will approve.”

A bill from Democratic Sen. Scott Dibble of Minneapolis would prohibit retailers from selling the products to minors. They also couldn’t display the products next to candy or gum, and “little cigars” would be classified as cigarettes and regulated more stringently.”

“I don’t know of one single electronic cigarette company on the planet that markets or sells their products to ‘youth,’” continued Gray. “Never once in my studies, reviews, and interaction with the makers of these alternatives to traditional, harmful-to-the-environment cigarettes have I had an inkling that these companies were promoting their products to minors. I don’t know what is going on in Minnesota, perhaps there was an isolated incident I don’t know about, but as far as my research shows, not one company has crossed that line,” added Gray.

Smoking is obviously harmful to the health of not only the individual who smokes, but also to others who are unfortunate enough to inhale second hand smoke. The odor from cigarettes also remains in people’s clothing, and most people will agree it is an unpleasant smell. Electronic cigarettes are not marketed as a healthier alternative by most companies, as there still remains the component of nicotine in the process, which obviously is harmful. However, smoking an electronic version of a cigarette has many advantages.

* No smell or ash
* Several flavors and levels of nicotine
* No tar, no tobacco
* No lingering cloud of smoke
* A huge savings in comparison to traditional cigarettes – up to a 75% savings
* Safe to smoke almost anywhere
* No damage to the environment – traditional cigarettes create garbage

It will be interesting to see how this entire niche plays out in the upcoming months. Many States are trying to ban the sale of electronic cigarettes, and of course, Big Tobacco is not happy giving up it’s revenues. The Chicago Tribune recently reported that the State of Illinois is trying to ban the sale of electronic cigarettes, citing the lack of approval by the Food & Drug Administration.

“If there are things that are (FDA-)approved to help people curb the habit of smoking, I’m all for it,” said sponsoring Sen. Terry Link, D-Waukegan. “Whatever the FDA approves, we will approve.”

Lobbyists on both sides of this argument have been active in voicing their opinion in Illinois and other States facing the same issue.

“I’m not trying to create a controversy, nor am I trying to insinuate that electronic cigarettes are completely safe. I am all for the regulation and proper manufacturing of electronic cigarettes. Obviously, if that happens, this innovation will help the environment and go a long way to helping people live healthier lives. I just hope in the meantime everyone who is battling on both sides of this argument come to understand just exactly how these devices work, as well as weight the pro’s and con’s of their impact on society before making a fast judgment,” concluded Gray.

Study: The E-Cigarette Reduces Nicotine Cravings, Withdrawl Symtoms

New research suggests that the electric cigarette can be an effective smoking alternative.

In a study recently published in the British medical journal, BMJ, researchers in New Zealand measured the effects of smoking an electric cigarette both on the desire to smoke regular cigarettes and on nicotine withdrawal symptoms. The performance of the e-cigarette (loaded with 16 mg of nicotine) was measured against regular cigarettes, a nicotine inhaler (also with 16mg of nicotine), and a “placebo” ( an e-cig with an empty nicotine cartridge).

A group of 40 cigarette smokers used the devices after abstaining for a night. Their craving relief was then rated throughout the day as well as a series of subjective, smoking-related symptoms and overall experience.

The researchers discovered that the 16mg e-cigarette significantly reduced the desire to smoke and placated typical withdrawal symptoms, such as irritability and lack of concentration, more then the placebo e-cig. The product was also deemed more pleasant to use then the inhaler and produced fewer unwanted side effects
